The scientific and mathematical miracles of the Qur’an

I've found things that were described in the Quran 1400 years ago that man simply could not have possibly known. The answer to the question of the Quranic Source of authorship becomes apparent. Who, but the Creator can know of such details about our universe millennia before man scientifically confirmed these things using tools of advanced technology?

First, Let me remind you that the Qur'an is not a book of Science, just as it is not a book of history, sociology, etc. The Qur’an is a book of guidance, divine guidance to those who seek to live a good and meaningful life here on earth. More appropriately, the Qur’an is a book of Signs; the term used for each of the more than 6000 verses in the Qur’an is the word “Ayah”, this word literal means “sign or miracle”.

Amongst these 6000+ Ayahs, more than a thousand happen to speak about Science. Some of these concepts in the Qur’an were hard to imagine before they were actually validated, and yet the evidence pointing to these phenomena remained in the Qur’an since the 7th century. The Qur’an till today is revealing more and more treasures that were once not fully understood without today’s powerful tools to appreciate the accuracy of such precise descriptive language in the Qur’an 1400 years ago.

Example 1: Life Created From Water

“And Allah (God) has created every animal from water: of them there are some that creep on their bellies; some that walk on two legs; and some that walk on four. Allah creates what He wills for verily Allah has power over all things.”– Qur’an English Translation [24:45]

“Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before we clove them asunder?
We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?”– Qur’an English Translation [21:30]

“It is
He Who has created man from water: then has He established relationships of lineage and marriage: for thy Lord has power (over all things).”– Qur’an English Translation [25:54]

The assertion that "Water is the main component of organic matter. 50-90% of the weight of living things consists of water" appear regularly in encyclopedias. Furthermore, 80% of the cytoplasm (basic cell material) of a standard animal cell is described as water in biology textbooks.

The analysis of cytoplasm and its appearance in textbooks took place hundreds of years after the revelation of the Qur'an. It is therefore impossible for this fact, now accepted by the scientific community, to have been known at the time the Qur'an was revealed. Yet, attention was drawn to it in the Qur'an 1,400 years before its discovery.

Example 2: The Duality of Creation and plants

“Glory to Allah, Who created in pairs all things that the earth produces, as well as their own (human) kind and (other) things of which they have no knowledge.”– Qur’an English Translation [36:36]

While "male and female" is equivalent to the concept of "pair," "things of which they have no knowledge," as expressed in the Qur'an, bears a broader meaning. Indeed, we encounter an additional meaning inferred to by this verse only more fully understood through present day discovery. The British physicist Paul Dirac, who discovered that matter was created in pairs, won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1933. This finding, known as "parity," revealed the duality known as matter and anti-matter.

Another example of duality in creation is plants. Botanists only discovered that there is a gender distinction in plants some 100 years ago. Yet, the fact that plants are created in pairs was revealed in the following verses of the Qur'an 1,400 years ago:

“He Who has, made for you the earth like a carpet spread out; has enabled you to go about therein by roads (and channels); and has sent down water from the sky." With it have We produced diverse pairs of plants each separate from the others.”– Qur’an English Translation [20:53]

Today we know that fruit comes from plants that have sexual characteristics even when they come from unfertilized flowers, like bananas. In the following verse we read:

“And it is He who spread out the earth, and set thereon mountains standing firm and (flowing) rivers: and fruit of every kind He made in pairs, two and two: He draweth the night as a veil o'er the Day. Behold, verily in these things there are signs for those who consider!”– Qur’an English Translation [13:3]

Example 3: The expanding universe

To pose another quick example, God speaks through the Qur’an about the universe expanding. In 1925, an American astronomer by the name of Edwin Hubble, provided observational evidence that all galaxies are receding from one another, which implies that the universe is expanding. The expansion of the universe is now an established scientific fact. This is what The Qur’an says about the nature of the universe:

“And it is We Who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We Who are steadily expanding it.” – Qur’an English Translation [51:47]

The Arabic word ‘Mu’si’oon’ is correctly translated as ‘expanding it’, and it refers to the creation of the expanding vastness of the universe. However, some English Translations (Yusef Ali Translation) have mistakenly translated the original Arabic verse as the following:

"With power and skill did We construct the Firmament: for it is We Who create the vastness of space. – Qur’an English Translation [51:47]

Some critics may try to claim based off of this translation that the Qur'an is simply stating that the universe is really big. However, even if one accepts this English translation and forgets about the actual Arabic word ‘Mu’si’oon' than one can still conclude the same conclusion. According to Dictionary.com, one of the definitions of ‘Vast’ includes “an immense or BOUNDLESS expanse or space.” What does boundless imply? Lets use logic, if something is boundless than this implies it is without constraint, thus no fixed constraint on bounds (i.e. a constant expansion of bounds.) Hence, the expanding universe.

Stephen Hawking, in his book, ‘A Brief History of Time’, says, “The discovery that the universe is expanding was one of the great intellectual revolutions of the 20th century”. The Qur’an mentioned the expansion of the universe, before man even learnt to build a telescope!

Example 4: The Big Bang Theory

“Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before we clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?”– Qur’an English Translation [21:30]

According to the Big Bang theory, the universe emerged from an extremely dense and hot state (singularity). Space itself has been expanding ever since, carrying galaxies with it. Initially there was one primary nebula, which later on separated with a Big Bang, giving rise to Galaxies, Stars, Sun & the very Earth that we live on. This is also right in line with Surah 51:47 mentioning the vastness and expansion of the universe, a remarkable assertion given 1400 years ago.

Martin Rees, who is one of the leading cosmologists in the world, states in his book, Our Cosmic Habitat (2001) "Our universe may once have been squeezed to a single point, but EVERYONE whether on Earth, or Andromeda, or even on the galaxies remotest from us can EQUALLY claim to have started from that point..." (Rees, page 55)

Example 5: Advanced Embryology

"Now let man but think from what he is created! He is created from a drop emitted-Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs," – Qur’an English Translation [86:5-7]

In embryonic stages, the reproductive organs of the male and female, i.e. the testicles and the ovaries, begin their development near the kidney exactly between the spinal column and the eleventh and twelfth ribs. Later they descend; the female gonads (testicles) stop in the pelvis while the male gonads (testicles) continue their descent before birth to reach the scrotum through the inguinal canal.

Even during the embryonic stage after the descent of the reproductive organ, these organs receive their nerve supply and blood supply from the Aorta, which is in the area between the backbone (spinal column) and the ribs. Even the lymphatic drainage goes to the same area.

Furthermore, the Qur'an refers to mans creation in the womb in specific stages. Indeed scientists have recently discovered that a person is developed inside their mother’s womb is three specific stages or what we today call Trimesters. This is not the only Ayah that talks about the Embryological stages as mentioned in the following verse:

“He created you (all) from a single person: then created, of like nature, his mate; and he sent down for you eight head of cattle in pairs: He makes you, in the wombs of your mothers, in stages, one after another, in THREE veils of darkness. such is Allah, your Lord and Cherisher: to Him belongs (all) dominion. There is no god but He: then how are ye turned away (from your true Centre)?” – Qur’an English Translation [39:6]

Example 6: The Layers of the atmosphere

One fact about the universe revealed in the verses of the Qur'an is that the sky is made up of seven layers:

"It is He Who created everything on the earth for you and then directed His attention up to heaven and arranged it into seven regular heavens. He has knowledge of all things." – Qur’an English Translation [2:29]

"Then He turned to heaven when it was smoke. In two days He determined them as seven heavens and revealed, in every heaven, its own mandate." – Qur’an English Translation [41:11-12]

The word "heavens," which appears in many verses in the Qur'an, is used to refer to the sky above the Earth, as well as the entire universe. Given this meaning of the word, it is seen that the Earth's sky, or the atmosphere, is made up of seven layers.

Today, it is known that the world's atmosphere consists of different layers that lie on top of each other.19 Based on the criteria of chemical contents or air temperature, the definitions made have determined the atmosphere of the earth as seven layers.20 According to the "Limited Fine Mesh Model (LFMMII)," a model of atmosphere used to estimate weather conditions for 48 hours, the atmosphere is also 7 layers. According to the modern geological definitions the seven layers of atmosphere are as follows:

1. Troposphere

2. Stratosphere

3. Mesosphere

4. Thermosphere

5. Exosphere

6. Ionosphere

7. Magnetosphere

The Qur'an says, "[He] revealed, in every heaven, its own mandate," in Surah Fussilat 12. In other words, Allah is stating that He assigned each heaven its own duty. Truly, as will be seen in following chapters, each one of these layers has vital duties for the benefit of human kind and all other living things on the Earth. Each layer has a particular function, ranging from   forming rain to preventing harmful rays, from reflecting radio waves to averting the harmful effects of meteors.

The verses below inform us about the appearance of the seven layers of the atmosphere:

"Do you not see how He created seven heavens in layers?" – Qur’an English Translation [71:15]

"He Who created the seven heavens in layers" – Qur’an English Translation [67:3]

Example 7: Mathematical Miracles of The Qur'an

  • "Will they not ponder the Qur’an? If it had been from other than Allah (God), they would have found many inconsistencies in it." – Qur’an English Translation [4:82]

  • Indeed, even mathematically speaking the Qur'an appears amazingly consistent:

"Truly, the likeness of Jesus with God is as the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust, and then said to him, 'Be!' and he was." - Qur’an English Translation [3:59]

Interestingly enough, the word 'Jesus' and 'Adam' both appear in the Qur'an exactly 25 times each. Truly, their likeness in the Qur'an appears to be in more than one way. Could these consistencies be a confirmation code from God? This is not an isolated event, in other places where the Qur'an makes comparisons the same phenoma happens. Also, when the Qur'an contrasts two things, a mathematical count difference of '1' occurs, indeed they are different.

    Number '19' mathematical miracle

So what's so special about the number 19...The gematrical value of the word "ONE" in all the scriptural languages - Aramaic, Hebrew, and Arabic is 19. The number 19, therefore, proclaims the First Commandment in all the scriptures: that there is only ONE God.

Also, the number 19 possesses many peculiar mathematical properties. For example, 19 is the sum of the first powers of 9 and 10, and the difference between the second powers of 9 and 10. Also, 19 is a prime number, meaning it can only be divided by 1 and itself.

The Miracle of the number 19 Present throughout the Quran:

God's warning to those who reject His clear signs

"Say thou: "This is my way: I do invite unto Allah (God),- on evidence clear as the seeing with one's eyes,- I and whoever follows me. Glory to Allah. and never will I join gods with Allah." - Qur’an English Translation [12:108]

But believe it or not, after producing these clear signs many people will still reject God's message. However, those people whom are arrogant in light of God's message will not receive the same guidance as those whom are humble, sincere, and eager to gain understanding:

"Those who behave arrogantly on the earth in defiance of right - them will I turn away from My signs: Even if they see all the signs, they will not believe in them; and if they see the way of right conduct, they will not adopt it as the way; but if they see the way of error, that is the way they will adopt. For they have rejected our signs, and failed to take warning from them. Those who reject Our signs and the meeting in the Hereafter,- vain are their deeds: Can they expect to be rewarded except as they have wrought?" - Qur’an English Translation [7:146-147]

"Those who believe not in the Signs of Allah,- Allah (God) will not guide them, and theirs will be a grievous Penalty." - Qur’an English Translation [16:104]

"This because they love the life of this world better than the Hereafter: and Allah will not guide those who reject Faith. Those are they whose hearts, ears, and eyes Allah (God) has sealed up, and they take no heed. Without doubt, in the Hereafter they will perish." - Qur’an English Translation [16:107-109]

"Of them there are some who (pretend to) listen to thee; but We have thrown veils on their hearts, So they understand it not, and deafness in their ears; if they saw every one of the signs, not they will believe in them; in so much that when they come to thee, they (but) dispute with thee; the Unbelievers say: "These are nothing but tales of the ancients." - Qur’an English Translation [6:25]
